German Food and Drink
Many people think of German cuisine as bread and beer.
Bread is a delicious indulgence that might just tempt your taste buds and in Germany you can enjoy over 300 different varieties.
You can also take advantage of all the German pastries like cakes, tarts and buns.
Although the Irish take the lead in beer consumption per person, Germany ranks second, which shows that Germans really do enjoy the popular beverage.
There are about 1,300 breweries in Germany, so choosing your favorite beer will not be an easy task.
If you truly enjoy beer, or just a fun festival, you will want to attend the biggest beer festival in the world – Oktoberfest.
The festival takes place in Munich, Bavaria, which is nestled in the beautiful Alps.
While bread and beer are easily found in Germany, there is a whole lot more to taste!
Pork, which is often served as sausage, is the most popular meat.
However, beef and poultry are also common dishes.
If you are more interested in enjoying fish, trout, mackerel, sardines and tuna are also found in many German meals.
Vegetables are usually served in soups or stews, but can also be served as a side dish.
Potatoes and asparagus are commonly found in German dishes, along with carrots, spinach, turnips, beans and cabbage.
German Schools
Schools in Germany differ greatly from the United States.
Children are all taught the same information through the 4th grade.
At this point, children must complete a minimum of nine years of total schooling and are separated according to their academic ability and family wishes.
There are four different schools that they can attend: Hauptschule, Realschule, Gymnasium or Gesamtschule.
The Hauptschule teaches at a slower pace and also offers vocational training.
The Realschule also offers students vocational training and can lead to higher vocational schools.
If students perform well academically at the Realschule, they can attend a Gymnasium upon graduation.
The Gymnasium prepares students for universities and students who graduate from this school receive a degree called the Abitur.
The Gesamtschule is a comprehensive school that any student can attend that offers college preparatory classes, general education classes and remedial courses.
Finding Housing in Germany
When renting an unfurnished apartment in Germany, be aware that unfurnished has a different meaning than in most other countries.
An unfurnished apartment in Germany will usually not have appliances, kitchen cabinets, lighting fixtures and sometimes not even a sink or a toilet.
Ask questions about what is included and get pictures if you are not able to see your new residence in person before you move in.
