Salzburg is a beautiful picturesque city located in the northern Alps in Austria.
You may recognize the city as the setting for the movie, The Sound of Music.
However, Salzburg’s biggest claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of one of the world’s greatest composers.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in 1756, and was baptized to the names Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus.
Mozart’s father began teaching him violin, piano and composition at age 4.
The future mastermind began performing for the public by age 6 and he was even playing his own compositions.
The young composer was soon a hit with the nobility and he began his tour alongside his family!
Mozart traveled with his mother, father and sister across Western Europe for three and half years.

At only ten years of age, Mozart composes the opera, “Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebotes” with older Salzburg composers.
Over the years, Mozart collaborated with some of the finest composers and musicians during his time.
From a very young age, Mozart’s operas were performed in front of elite audiences and continued to travel as a well-respected musician.
Mozart had many jobs throughout the years as a court composer, touring musician and music teacher.
He played for nobles and even received high honors from Pope Clemens XIV.
Mozart eventually married and had six children.
Sadly enough, four of his children died during their childhood.

Mozart composed his final opera, “Die Zauberflöte,” which became a late success.
Mozart died on December 5, 1791 at the age of 35.
The cause of his death is subject to controversy.
A few weeks before his death, he expressed to his wife that he was worried about being poisoned.
However, syphilis and heart issues are the more likely cause of death according to historians.

The citizens of Salzburg still celebrate the life of Mozart as he still plays a role of historical significance for the city.
Thousands of tourists every year visit the home where Mozart was born, which is now a museum.
The 250th anniversary of his birth took place in 2006, and to note the occasion, all 35 churches of Salzburg range their bells.

There are many memorials and tourist destinations that Salzburg offers to remember one of the world’s most famous composers.
You can even try a famed Mozartkugel, or “Mozart Ball,” while visiting Salzburg, which is of course named after the famous composer.
The pistachio, marzipan, nougat treat is covered in milk chocolate and was first created it in 1890.
The original treat, which can still be found today, is handmade in the Konditorei Fürst at Alter Markt square.

There is even a university named after the city’s favorite son – The Mozarteum University.
This is one of the world’s most prestigious music academies and offers over 40 artistic and education courses.
