IntlMOVE has put together a summary of London’s transportation to facilitate your transition to you new home overseas.
London Air Transportation
When you move to London, you will be close to Heathrow Airport.
This airport is the busiest airports in the word, which means you will have a lot of options for flights back to your home country.
This airport has five separate terminals, so know where you are going before you arrive to board your plane.
Gatwick Airport is a smaller international airport than Heathrow and much easier to get to when you need to travel.
Gatwick Airport is about 28 miles outside of London and is the city’s second busiest airport.
The London Underground
The Underground, which is also referred to as the tube has been around since 1890.
There are 12 lines that service London travelers in addition to the Docklands Light Railway System.
This is often the most affordable way to get around London, and it is also fast and efficient.
London Train Transpiration
In addition to the London Underground, there is also another form of train transportation that is above ground.
Some of the above ground trains better service some areas of London, so check to see which mode of transport is best for you.
London Bus Transportation
There are double-decker busses as well as single-decker busses that can ease your transportation around London.
When you take the bus, the bus stops have a list of bus routes that stop there.
You must flag down the busses that are listed as “request only.”
There are weekly and monthly passes available for London busses.
If you purchase the London Travelcard, you can have unlimited use of the London Underground and the busses.
The London Underground does not run at night, but London does have night busses.
These busses are marked with a letter ‘N’ on the signs.
These busses run from about 11:30 pm to 6 am.
Taxis
Taxis are another option in London.
When you take a black taxi, you can be assured that the driver knows the ins and outs of London.
The drivers of these taxis must pass an exam before they can drive one of the famous black taxis.
They need to memorize about 25,000 streets, the quickest route between two points and they must know where to find hotels, train stations, hospitals, theaters and much more.
Be aware that evening rates are more expensive and a 10 percent tip is expected.
Minicabs are another taxi option.
These taxis cannot be hailed on the street, but must be called before your trip.
These taxis are unmarked, so when the minicab arrives, make sure the driver knows your name and destination.
You can also arrange a password with the dispatcher and the driver will repeat the password to you when he or she arrives.
It is always good to travel safe.
Ask the dispatcher for the fare and verify the fare with the driver before you head out because there are no meters in these taxis.
