International Movers offer different shipping service options. Some offer only “bare bones” service; others only “full service”; some offer a choice of both “bare bones” and “full service” and/or a variation of both. Shippers have the right to select the kind of service they want, but they need to understand what they will have to expect of themselves in their choice. |
International moving companies have the right to offer a variety of services, but their quotes have to be explicit in what their prices include and what they do not include.
As the shipper, it is up to you to properly compare service quotes. To do so, you have to understand the terminology and differences involved regarding what is included and what is not included in each quote. Do not underestimate the difficulty involved in comparing quotes. If you choose a quote based on cost alone, it will almost surely mean choosing the most costly option.
IntlMOVE makes it easier for you to compare quotes step by step:
Shipment volume
- All quotes must be for the same shipment volume.
- For Less than Container Load (LCL) shipments: determine your shipment volume in CFT and get every quote for that exact same volume.
- For Full Container Load (FCL) shipments: all quotes should be for same container size – 20FT, 40FT, or 40 High Cube.
Service Type
- Most common services: Door to Door and Door to Port.
- Service types must be identical when comparing quotes.
- Do not compare Door to Door service with Door to Port Service: Door to Port is less expensive.
- Door to Port quotes do not include any destination costs: customs clearance, terminal handling charge or delivery to your home.
Packing
- Full Packing Services: International Movers will provide all packing materials for box packing and furniture wrapping, and will make sure that all your items are expertly packed for international shipping.
- Packed by Owner Service: As the shipper, you are responsible for getting your own packing materials and for professionally packing your belongings for international shipping.
To properly compare “full packing” service to “packed by owner” service, make sure the company offering the lower cost “packed by owner” service gives you a quote for any additional charges that might be incurred if you have to switch to “full packing” service. The additional quote should be per CFT for LCL and per container size for FCL. This will allow you to know the difference when you compare their initial quote with the quote which includes “full packing” service.
Terminal Handling Charges
Ask for an estimate of charges for comparison between quotes that include terminal handling charges and ones that do not include them.
These charges are usually minimal in many countries. In some countries they are part of the basic quote. Some countries, like Brazil, the charges can amount to thousands of dollars. Be informed.
Following the above points will be very advantageous when you compare shipping quotes.
It is also important to note:
- Pricing is always important, but should not be “the” deciding factor.
- Shipping personal belongings with sentimental value does not have a “price tag.” Choice should be based on trust and reliability, not cost exclusively.
- Our advice: forgo the internet and its flashy advertising – “Internet Marketing” is not an indication of a shipping company’s skill and/or success.
- Look into and visit your prospective International Movers operation, their warehouse.
- Make sure you trust the shipping company you choose with your belongings – household goods and personal effects. If you cannot, then get a trusted and judgment-worthy friend/family member to do it for you.
- Remember IntlMOVE motto: “seeing is believing”
