One challenge you will face is getting your mail overseas.
There are couple options to choose from to get your mail forwarded to your new address.

Inform all close friends and family of your move overseas.
They will most likely communicate with you through email or other online services.
However, there may be a time when they need to ship you a package.
You want to ensure you receive the items being sent to you, so this should be one of the first issue  on your list of things to do.

Paperless Statements
Determine what bills and mail you can receive by email.
Many credit card companies, phone companies, investment firms and other mail you receive regularly have a paperless option.
Receiving these statements by email or online will give you the security of knowing that you will receive the information you need every month.
Forwarding mail can take weeks.
Paperless statements ensure that you receive important documents in a timely manner.

Friends and Family
Companies may not have the ability or willingness to send your mail overseas.
If you cannot receive paperless statements, you will have to arrange for another method to receive needed items.
You have the option of asking a close friend or relative to handle your mail forwarding.
However, this can be a very time consuming task for your loved one.
The person receiving your mail will have to sort through your mail to determine what they need to ship.
Shipping a lot of mail overseas on a regular basis can also rack up some hefty fees.
The inconvenience of constant trips to the post office might become problematic for the person that is doing this favor for you.

Mail Forwarding Services
One of the most dependable options is to sign up for a mail forwarding service.
This alleviates the stress of relying on someone to manage your mail delivery.
The cost will be determined by the size, weight and how fast you need your mail.
The cost will also vary by company and by country.
Usually, there is a setup fee, shipping fees and annual or monthly fees.
Some companies charge monthly and annual fees, so read the fine print to determine your exact charges.
There may also be packaging and handling charges applied to your account, so look for hidden charges.

Keep in mind that not all services deliver to all countries.
The mail forwarding service works by providing you with a US address.
You will still be responsible in regards to your new country’s restrictions of what can be sent to you.
Also, you will be responsible for any customs, tariffs or taxes.

Find a service that gives you a tracking number for your mail.
If you are receiving important documents or packages, you will want to have tracking information in case the package gets lost.

Depending on what you need, you will most likely want to choose a service that controls what is being forwarded to you.
Some companies let you control what is sent to you through the internet.
You can look at exactly what you receive and let them know how to handle it for you.
You will save money on shipping costs by having the mail forwarding service dispose of your junk mail.

Consolidating shipments can also help save you money on shipping costs.
There are companies that will hold and repack your mail so you can wait for other items to be placed in the same shipment.
Some companies allow you to have more than one name on an account.
If you have other family members or business associates going overseas with you, this option will save you money.

Overall, there are many options and companies to choose from for a mail forwarding service.
After you coordinate your needs and your budget, you will be able to choose the right service that works for you and your family.

This was a great article about moving internationally. I thought the US post office would forward everything and I had to find out the hard way that this wasn’t the case!

This was a revelation! I felt so naive and silly after reading this…I had just assumed the US Postal Service would be able to forward to a foreign address. Talk about taking something for granted. At least I can start making preparations. Thank you to whoever at IntlMOVE wrote this!
